What Was The Source?
Of course we know now how the plague started and how it was transmitted but to the people of Medieval Europe this question was of great concern. Most people believed the plague to be a punishment sent from god because they had done something to anger him, but others saw past this. Professors opined that the plague was caused by the unfortunate conjunction of Saturn, Jupiter and Mars in the sign of Aquarius in 1348. This conjunction caused hot moist conditions and poisonous vapours to leak from the earth.
Types of Plague
There are three different types of plague. The bubonic plague which was the most common one, septicemic plague which occurs when the organism that was responsible for the disease (Yersinia pestis bacteria) multiply in the blood and pneumonic plague which was the most serious, occurred when plague bacteria infects the lungs called pneumonia.
The bubonic plague was the most common form of the disease; bacteria infect the lymph system and become inflamed. Most of the time, bubonic plague is contracted from bites of an infected flea or rodent, usually a rat. Bubonic plague is rarely spread from person to person but can still happen. Some flu-like symptoms include fevers, headaches, chills, weakness and swollen or tender buboes.
